This topic has been dealt with over and over again. But, as they say, we must continue to carry the torch forward. I have a problem with the "amount" of reservations and with the sections to which it is provided. There is nothing unique about my thoughts and they have been discussed before. I will just take up a particular case study of my friend who gave CAT, 2011.
He is a smart student from BITS Pilani who did his schooling from DPS Patna. His CAT score was:
Quant + DI - 99.36 percentile, 166/225
VA + Logical Reasoning - 99.79 percentile. 163/225
Overall 99.92 percentile, 329/450
10th - 80+
12th - 80+
College - 60-80
Work Ex - 1-2 years
He did not do Masters, like most people who go for an MBA. Including his "Applicant Rating" and CAT score, his final score came out to be 0.6935 whereas IIMA specifies the minimum requirement for an interview call for a general student to be 0.7050. I thought what if he had more experience, and checked if he would have qualified if he had 2+ years of experience. His score then turns out to be 0.7027, still short by a very narrow margin.
The calculations are done based on data given on this page, http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/users/admission/files/Short%20listing%20Criteria%20for%20PGP%202012-14.pdf
Check the eligibility for other category students.
NC - OBC: 0.595
SC: 0.521
ST: 0.453
DA: 0.462
As compared to a DA candidate , a General candidate needs to score 52.5 % higher [(0.705-0.462)/0.462].
With regards to ST candidate , a General candidate needs to score 55.6% higher.
Similarly w.r.t. SC candidate, a General candidate needs to score 35.3% higher.
W.r.t. NC - OBC candidate, a General candidate needs to be 18.5% higher.
How are such huge percentages justified? So in the same class, a general candidate would, theoretically be, 55% more qualified than another student?
My friend was in the top bracket in almost everything, except the 60-80% marks he got in college. How perfect are you supposed to be as a GE category?
One last stat, total no of general candidates called for interview = 561
Total no of reserved category candidates called for interview = 616
You decide, how fair is it?
Disclaimer - This article is by no means against the admission criterion imposed by IIMA, it is just against the corrupted system of reservation deeply engraved in our country's policies now.
P.S. Good thing is, my friend anyway wants to get through C. But, the issue remains.

This is a burning issue mate, and there are a lot many complexities than that which meet the eye, and not all of the issues are pro-ge category,so we need to be a little prudent here. All I am gonna say is, there is no denying the fact that a lot of guys take advantage of the lower standards expected of them to sail through in situations where a general category student might have been more deserving. But you also cannot overlook the fact that there are students who need this sort of a,shall we say, "push up" in order to shine and gain that confidence or oppotunities that they have lacked for most of their lives. It gives them a chance to earn that "self respect" or esteem which they so easily lose because of that "reserved" tag that we all put on these guys. We need to imagine it from their point of view also, and "merit" or "quality" cannot be the sole judging criteria in these issues-which run deep.
People might argue that "Oh but why do they have to snatch our places in these reputed instiitutions like IITs or IIMs - but when you take a look at the crappy and many a times non-exitent career options available to them in their own small towns and places, you willdefintely agree with me that this would not benefit them in the long run. For example - many guys from the North-East are SCs/STs by birth and they can't even get the right to study in their local areas because of lack of governement intiatives, infrastructure, lack of colleges, schools and so forth. Reservation enables them to come forth, mingle with the main stream society, and gradually bring themselves up to the standards of the General category. That is what I feel. Do these reserved seats get abused by people who don't relly need them? YES. Is SO much reservation justified? NO. Does the reservation policy needs to re-looked at,so that a plan may be intiated wherein the criteria for the reserved candidates are made stricter and stricter as time goes on? I absolutely agree. But to do away completely with reservation? I will have to say a no, and I have explained why so above.
And lastly buddy, I am sure Kapil Sibal, A Raja, Ramalinga Raju were General category students!! ;-) What use their "superiority" and "brilliance" is if guys like you and me curse them and call them names? All that matters is to be a good human being in real life , so that people remember us for our goodness and great deeds lol.

PS - This opinion should certainly not be treated as GENERAL CATEGORY -bashing in any way, shape or form.Heck, I am a bloody general category guy lmao!! I just tried to look through the other side of the prism and express my humble opinions. Cheers!!
You touched a really frustrating cord here...
Minzy,
I got worried that why you deleted the original comment as it was very well written. Good to see it back.
I am glad you brought this up. I have a few points here that I would like to share with you and the rest of the readers.
1. This information comes from what was taught to me by my Social Science teacher in high school, I have not verified it myself. But according to her, the Constitution makers wanted the reservations to be put in place to bring the "lower" caste groups at par with higher caste groups. It was supposed to be reviewed after every 10 years and be decreased with time. But due to vote bank politics, it took a reverse trend.
2. I am all in favor of economic based reservation and not caste based. There might be difficulties in shifting to that system, but I think that is the more ideal situation.
3. There should be a limit up to which reservation should be kept. Why keep pushing the people even through their Masters, their PhDs their jobs thereafter. I can understand a certain push being given up to the Bachelor's level, but the push should be reduced at higher level, something which does not occur.
4. To tell you the truth, I do feel bad about the fact that the "reserved" category gets attached with people from these classes. During placements at IIT, our All India Rank, mentioning the rank and category, is compulsorily present. The sole reason for that, as I see it, is to let the company know whether the candidate they are interviewing is from the reserved category, which I believe creates a bias in their mind. I don't think that is fair to the candidate.
At no point of time I am cursing these politicians. Its not a work of one person, these politicians are from amongst us. We ourselves need to work in order to rectify the presently malignant system.
I appreciate your thoughts Minzy.
@Anushree - It sure is a subject matter of great frustration for thousands and lakhs of students. Actually, not even students but also people higher up in the bureaucracy.
Abe thanks mat bol. It felt good that you took up this issue with extreme maturity and wisdom, and raised the current problems rather than saying, "Oh f*** them #$%@&^ etc etc". To be frank, some of the words I have seen written against Reserved category guys makes me hang my head in shame. Its like we think ourselves to be "superior" species than them. It really upsets me. Abusing others to show ourselves better is NOT the way to show our greatness. Its almost like the argument about the "superiority of the USA" vs "the shittyness of third world countries."
And your follow up response to my comment was great too. I just haven't got time now, so will definitely make a mental note to reply back ASAP.
Bbye n TC!! :)

PS- Deorha I love you hehehe. :P
I feel the issue of reservation is like passing the buck...
if basic educational infrastrucutre is provided with impetus on quality teaching and retention of the students, then such a situation would not arise which requires the evil of reservation. it's like grabbing food from somebody's mouth to feed the rest, which is cruel and inhumane.
I do agree with the economic status based reservation, but only upto school level, as government colleges are not so expensive and hence merit can be given priority here..
IMHO, more than an educational reform, what we need is an electoral reform. Caste and reservation are major vote bank attractions by the politicos and until there is a change in the way they are elected, reservations shall and will remain the way it is now.
To be clear, I'm not against reservation, I'm against its mindless application and abuse. One plausible solution that seems to me, is that who ever is eligible for reservation should get it, to their heart's content. And then when they are finally leveled with the general category, their children should be made ineligible for any reservation whatsoever, as there is no reason they should be considered underprivileged in any way.
Just my two cents.
